VAC’S WHACKS

I was pretty sure it was supposed to be Curt Schilling’s bloody sock Gary Thorne was talking about the other night, but given the level of hysteria in Red Sox land, apparently it was the Shroud of Turin instead.

It sure sounds like the blessed union of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger wasn’t exactly modeled on Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. Or Martha and George from “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” for that matter.

A wonderful film called “The First Saturday in May” screened at the Tribeca Film Festival this week, a labor of love by a couple of brothers named John and Brad Hennegan, Long Island kids who spent an awful lot of time hanging around Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga, time that helped produce a splendid movie that reminds us why the racetrack can be the most magical of all sporting stages.

There are times I reallly would like to see what kind of magic Orlando Hernandez could perform with a Wiffle ball.
