HAZEL’S MOVE WAS ON THE MARQ

Tom Konchalski said it’s easy to see what sets Pat Hazel apart from other players with his size and ability.

“He has a great work ethic and desire,” the longtime recruiting expert said. “That’s why he’s going to the Big East.”

That’s not the only reason he’s headed to Marquette in the fall. The 6-foot-7 Hazel left Bayside for Blair Academy in New Jersey after averaging 16 points and 16 rebounds a game as a junior.

“I was getting looks from some schools, but I thought I could do better,” Hazel said. “Blair was a better environment for me academically and basketball-wise.”

Evidently, he was right. Hazel participated in the Jordan Brand Regional Game at Madison Square Garden last night, where he will also play some games as a collegian.

Mike Cavataio made his debut at his future home last night. The St. Francis Prep star is going to St. John’s, after playing just one season of varsity basketball. The transfer from Christ the King had to sit out last year, but put up 25 points a game as a senior.

“I missed not playing, but everything happens for a reason,” said Cavataio, who was held scoreless in the Regional game as his City team beat the Suburban team, 114-112.

CTK’s Malik Boothe, another guard headed to the Red Storm, had six assists for the City, which was led by Canarsie’s Nathaniel Lester’s 22 points.

There were no problems in the crowd of 7599 – including Michael Jordan and Spike Lee – at the Garden last night, unlike the last time a high school game was held there. On March 19, a melee erupted during Lincoln’s 77-50 win over Boys & Girls in the PSAL championship.

Jeffrey Jordan, Michael’s son, finished with 9 points for the Blue team in a 127-119 Yellow team win in the Jordan Brand All-American Game. Bronx native Corey Fisher had 12 points for the Yellow team.
