COLLEGES: Wooden hospitalized

Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden has been hospitalized for treatment of a possible recurrence of diverticulitis. Daughter Nancy Muehlhausen said the 96-year-old Hall of Fame coach was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday because of bleeding in the colon.

* Mark Schmidt is leaving Robert Morris to take over as St. Bonaventure’s basketball coach, according to published reports . . . South Alabama’s John Pelphrey was hired as the basketball coach at Arkansas.

NFL: Falcons sign Harrington

Joey Harrington, released after last season by the Dolphins, signed a two-year deal with the Falcons yesterday, becoming a leading contender to back up starting quarterback Michael Vick . . . Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him in Denver through the 2011 season.

MLB: Cards’ Carpenter on DL

Cardinals staff ace Chris Carpenter was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday after an MRI exam in St. Louis revealed arthritis and a previously undiscovered impingement in his right elbow.

* Braves left-hander Mike Hampton, who has not pitched since 2005, will have season-ending surgery on his left elbow today in New York. Hampton, who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery in September 2005, will have a torn tendon in the elbow repaired.

* Keith Hernandez holds a 350-vote lead at first base over Don Mattingly in voting to determine a 50th anniversary Gold Glove team. Other leaders include Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Ken Griffey Jr. in the outfield, Joe Morgan at second base, Ozzie Smith at shortstop, Brooks Robinson at third base, Johnny Bench at catcher and Greg Maddux at pitcher. BLOTTER: Belfour, ‘mate arrested

Florida Panthers goalie Ed Belfour and teammate Ville Peltonen were arrested at a popular South Beach bar early yesterday after Belfour got in a scuffle with a police officer. Belfour was charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence.

* Former Vikings defensive lineman Jim Marshall‘s felony drug conviction was scrubbed from his record by the Minnesota Board of Pardons with the aid of his former coach, Hall of Famer Bud Grant. Marshall, 70, won a pardon for his 1991 conviction on a cocaine possession charge, a clean bill of health he sought so he can travel the world without restrictions to do work for a nonprofit he co-founded.
