Cut to the Chase Indeed

“The Departed” has pulled even with “Little Miss Sunshine” and the win came in a key category: film editing, which some experts see as a harbinger of the Best Picture Award. Please, let’s get this thing over already. There’s a big snowstorm in the East and the newspaper trucks are waiting.

I’m a not-too-shabby 15 for 20; I was the only one of the Gurus O’Gold at Movie City News to pick “I Need to Wake Up,” Melissa Ethridge’s theme from “An Inconvenient Truth,” to win best song. Beyonce went home empty-handed as the three songs from that film cancelled each other out. At least we got to see a lip-lock between Melissa, who gave a terrific acceptance speech, and her girlfriend.

And we were certainly surprised to see a clip from “American Dreamz” sneak into Michael Mann’s montage of American historical scenes, along with another notable flop, Steven Spielberg’s “1941.”
