2 HURT IN ROCK CTR. CRASH

Two women crossing a busy street at Rockefeller Center were hurt when they were caught in a smashup last night, cops said.

The two were crossing 48th Street at Fifth Avenue at 7 p.m. when a car tried to overtake a cab and smashed into it, a witness said.

The women were hit by one or both vehicles.

“This idiot came charging down [Fifth],” said witness Bengt Damm. “The taxi was ready to turn left [onto East 48th Street] from the second lane. He tried to overtake the cabby and hit him.

Damm said the people in the cab and car appeared OK. “The lunatic driver – he was in shock. He just sat there,” he said.

The women were taken to Bellevue and St. Vincent’s Midtown hospitals in stable condition. No one was charged.
