OFFENSE PULLS AMAZIN’ VANISHING ACT, AGAIN

Phillies 3 – Mets 0

PHILADELPHIA – Before Monday, the Mets had been shut out twice this season. Heading into today’s series finale, they’ve now been blanked twice more.

The Mets could gather only five hits last night against the Phillies, losing for the third straight game, 30. The Mets were outscored 24-4 in the first two games of the series (13-0 and 11-4).

They may be getting closer in terms of margin, but they are showing nothing with their offense.

Other than Jose Reyes’ three homers on Tuesday (two solo shots and a tworun blast), the Mets, who lead the NL East by 12 games, have done zilch at the plate.

“Nobody in here is panicking.

Nobody’s scratching their head. It’s part of the game,” David Wright said.

“We’ve got a lot of veterans in here, and it just happens.

We’ve run into some good arms and that, combined with going up there and having bad at-bats, I think is the cause of the last couple days.

But we’ll bounce out of it.” Last night against Jon Lieber, they had only five singles, and the first one ended with an out.

In the second inning, Carlos Delgado ripped the ball to right, ending his 1-for-26 skid. But Delgado couldn’t get to second, thrown out by Shane Victorino on the attempted double.

Over the last four games, the Mets are 3-for-32 with men on base (0-for-7 last night) and they have zero hits with runners in scoring position, having gone a total of 0-for-8. In the last two games, they only have one atbat with runners in scoring position. There have been almost no opportunities.

Tom Glavine (7 IP, 3 ER) pitched a strong game for the third straight outing, but he lost his second straight because of the Mets bats.

“My last three starts have been really good,” said Glavine, adding, “if nothing else, these last three games shows us that we’re not invincible.” Last Friday in Washington, Glavine gave up two runs in six innings and lost 2-1. Last night, he surrendered Chris Coste’s two-run homer in the second inning, a shot to left. He also gave up another run in the sixth on Abraham Nunez’s sac fly.
