S.I. $UFFERS TOW BLOW

If you owe a fortune in unpaid parking tickets, get your car to Staten Island now.

Towing came to a screeching halt in the borough in March, after the contract with the company that tows vehicles on Staten Island expired.

Now, rather than calling in tow trucks, deputy sheriffs in the city’s Finance Department, which oversee towing on Staten Island, can only place notification stickers on cars with more than $350 in outstanding tickets.

The Finance Department hopes to award the contract by mid-September to Staten Island Towing Service, department spokesman Owen Stone said.

City Councilman John Liu (D-Queens) said “it’s great for Staten Island residents, but this is another example of how the city’s towing system is at best mysterious, and at worst, unfair.”
