The Buildings Department – responsible for collecting millions of dollars in licensing and construction-permit fees – didn’t adequately secure several locations where cash transactions were conducted, City Comptroller Bill Thompson said yesterday.
“I am troubled by these findings,” he said. “The measures that are in place are not adequate to prevent or detect theft or misappropriation of cash receipts.”
The Buildings Department collected about $77 million last year and is in the process of implementing nine safety measures the comptroller has recommended.
