FED ED. CHIEF A ‘CHARTER’ MEMBER

Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings yesterday rapped the statewide cap on charter schools, saying parents are clamoring for more school choice. Her comments, at a Queens church, come as lawmakers face mounting pressure from parents and politicians to raise the limit on the schools.

Gov. Pataki has proposed raising the cap from 100 schools, reached earlier this year, to 250 and allowing Schools Chancellor Joel Klein to authorize an unlimited number of the schools.

The city will have 56 of the state’s charter schools by fall.
