RON KUBY, high priest of all liberals, mouthpiece to the guilty and the not so guilty, was talking about Curtis Sliwa throwing down the gauntlet.
Kuby, who co-hosts a morning WABC radio talk show with Sliwa, was responding to what Sliwa said about his partner testifying for the defense in the “Junior” Gotti trial.
Sliwa claims his co-host was acting almost like a Judas.
“The problem with Curtis is that he thinks this trial is all about him,” Kuby told me. “Somehow, he thinks this is a case of Sliwa vs. John Gotti Jr.”
“Now, it might be a surprise to Curtis. This is a serious issue of the United States Justice Department vs. John Gotti Jr.”
Now, whoever shot Sliwa, Kuby says, must be punished. Whoever organized the shooting must be punished, but he doesn’t have a clue who did it.
Kuby gave a mischievous smile: “Now, who on Earth would want to shoot Curtis? Well, pick up the telephone directory and start with ‘A for Aardvark.’ ”
Sliwa and Kuby disagree on just about everything, but Kuby says he has a great personal affection for his co-host.
Kuby, a 22-year veteran as a lawyer before the bar, has written law books, co-hosts a radio show and anchors a show on Court TV. His mentor was the controversial civil-rights lawyer, the late Bill Kuntsler.
Kuby was asked the obvious. Has your testimony supporting Junior Gotti torpedoed the prosecution’s case?
“I don’t have a dog in this fight,” Kuby said, “but my contact with John Jr. was as a lawyer. Today I am a witness and I can only answer questions I’m asked.”
Kuby said it was irrelevant whether he believed Junior Gotti was sincere in 1998 when he said he wanted to quit the mob.
“But I do believe John Jr. was sincere when he said he wanted to leave the world of crime behind him,” he said.
Meanwhile, a gentle whisper into the ear of Curtis Sliwa. Sadly, you were shot recklessly and viciously, but Curtis old boy, the trial is not about you.
