DISABLED VETS FIND WRITE WAY

A Manhattan theatrical workshop is inviting disabled vets home from Iraq and Afghanistan to sign up for a free writing program designed just for them – and Tony Soprano hopes it’s an offer they can’t refuse.

Some of the 40 vets who take the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped’s seminar may get to hear their words performed next fall on Broadway by the likes of James Gandolfini, star of HBO’s “The Sopranos.”

“When someone becomes disabled, everyone immediately wants to restore their physical ability,” said Rick Curry, the Jesuit brother who founded the NTWH. “But they neglect the intellectual and artistic life.”

In the 10-day program, which is to be offered twice this summer, “these wounded warriors can train their imaginations,” said Curry, who won a Post Liberty Medal last year for creating the nonprofit group in 1977.

“The imagination has the power to . . . show them they’re capable of a rich, full life,” said Curry, who was born without a right forearm.

He hopes to enroll 20 vets in each of the two workshops, to be held on the NTWH campus on the coast of Maine July 14-24 and July 28-Aug. 7.
