SMART CAM TAKES AIM

Smart cameras – which can detect a gunshot and rotate in that direction to capture the shooter on video – will be the latest high-tech weapon in the war against crime.

“The technology’s out there, it’s time to pilot it,” city Criminal Justice Coordinator John Feinblatt said in an interview with The Post.

Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the plan in his State of the City address on Thursday and city officials soon plan to solicit bids from companies.

A pilot program employing the cameras has been under way in Chicago for more than six months, and the cameras are already in dozens of locations.

A few companies already sell cameras featuring technology that identifies a gunshot, triangulates the position from where the blast came and points the camera at the site of the sound.
