IT’S STENCH WARFARE – DEAD FISH SMOTHER L.I. BEACH

Something’s fishy in East Hampton.

Residents of the tony town’s Springs community awoke at the weekend to find hundreds of thousands of dead bunker fish washed up inside Three Mile Harbor, behind Maidstone Park Beach.

By yesterday afternoon, the fish had started to decompose and the stench was positively stomach-turning.

Town officials are investigating the cause, but it’s believed the fish may have died naturally when the water in the secluded cove heated up in the sun and became depleted of oxygen.

While the stretch of beach is popular with swimmers – nobody was setting foot in the foul-smelling water yesterday.

“It’s so bad that the birds aren’t even touching them,” one resident said.
