HYDROGEN RISES TO TAKE STYMIE

Despite getting hit in the face by the whip of Song of the Sword, Hydrogen muscled his way between horses in the stretch and just got up to edge favored Aggadan by a nose to win the $79,450 Stymie Handicap at Aqueduct yesterday. Song of the Sword finished 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

The winner was trained by Bruce Levine and ridden to victory by Richard Migliore. He ran the mile and an eighth in 1:50.82 and paid $9.60 to win.

3RD RACE – Convertibull, adding blinkers in his second career start with jockey Laura Kornmeyer aboard, was acting up in the gate prior to the start of the race. When the gates opened up, Convertibull broke sharply and stalked the early pace. But when entering the far turn, Convertibull was all keyed up and Kornmeyer tried to get the horse to avoid running up on the heels of the front runners. But Convertibull clipped heels with Marine Seal and sent Kornmeyer to the ground. Kornmeyer was able to get inside the inner rail and eventually walk to the waiting ambulance under her own power. Both Kornmeyer and horse were uninjured. Wild About Jon was able to take advantage of the action behind him, leading for most of the race and drawing off from I Live for This in the stretch for the victory.

6TH RACE – Tough luck for Harmony Hall. He stalked the pace while saving ground and then tried to angle outside for clear running room in the stretch. But he got trapped and had nowhere to go, having to steady and lose all momentum. Judge’s Case was also saving ground early and did check in the stretch as well, but he was able to find a way to get outside and finish full of run, getting up in time to win by a nose.

9th RACE – Kiss the Lips was in good position and stalked the early pace and then took over the lead on the far turn. She tried to draw off, but favored Shorhouse ducked inside and ran down Kiss the Lips for the victory. Shesasmokin made up some ground on the rail but was beaten to a spot by the winner and had to settle for third.
