TAKING A STEP BACK

Jet Report Card

QUARTERBACKS: D

Chad Pennington (19-of-30, 162 yards, 77.4 rating, one rushing TD) didn’t have the magic this time.

RUNNING BACKS: D

Curtis Martin (20-for-70 rushing) didn’t exactly dominate. He made some key runs but was stopped on a huge third- and-5 late in the game.

WIDE RECEIVERS: D+

Justin McCareins (6-83) had his best game catching the ball as a Jet. San tana Moss (2-12) was used mostly as a decoy.

TIGHT ENDS: C

Chris Baker (3-26) and Anthony Becht (2-8, one drop) were decent in the pass ing game. Run-blocking overall wasn’t as good as it has been.

OFFENSIVE LINE: D+

Best individual play of the day was LG Pete Kendall’s blocking job on Pats LB Rosevelt Colvin on a Pennington TD run.

DEFENSIVE LINE: B

DE Shaun Ellis had six tackles and 1 ½ sacks. DT Dewayne Robertson had a bad roughing-the-passer penalty but was a penetrating force with five tackles.

LINEBACKERS: C+

Jonathan Vilma was torched on a big pass play to Kevin Faulk but had four tackles. Eric Barton led the team with 12 tackles.

SECONDARY: C

S Eric Coleman had 11 tackles. CB David Barrett (seven tackles) was strong in run force. S Reggie Tongue had four tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C

Brutal 12-men-on-field penalty on Tongue to give Patriots a second chance. Not a great day of returning.

KICKING GAME: C

P Toby Gowin had four punts for a pal try 33.8-yard average with one inside the 20. No action for Doug Brien other than a PAT.

COACHING: D

Herman Edwards did a good job of keeping his players level-headed for this game. Problem was, despite playing hard, they made some dumb mistakes.
