SPECIAL-ED KIDS WAIT TOO LONG: POL

More than 28,000 students tested last year to see if they should go into special-education classes are still waiting for the results, says Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Last April, 12,997 students were waiting to find out if they would be placed in special-ed classes. That figure has jumped to 28,640, according to Weiner (D-Brooklyn, Queens).

“For many kids, special ed can be the key to a productive and rewarding life. The mayor has turned his back on these kids,” Weiner said.

Department of Education spokeswoman Michele McManus said, “Our special-ed reforms are aimed at redirecting resources back into classrooms and ensuring that schools take responsibility for all students in the building, including those with special needs.”
