‘OLD MAN’ CHREBET STILL ABLE TO CUT IT

JET NOTES

Wayne Chrebet put it in the best perspective he could muster.

“This,” the Jets’ veteran receiver said after yesterday’s 16-14 comeback victory over the Bills, “is what I came back for.”

Chrebet, who during the offseason wasn’t sure he could play again after a series of issues stemming from the post-concussion syndrome that ended his 2003 season prematurely, turned in his best performance yesterday since the 2001 season, catching eight passes for 90 yards.

“The younger receivers are telling me, ‘You’ve still got it, old man,’ ” Chrebet said. “I appreciate that. For me, [the game] is different. This is not something I knew I’d be able to experience again. For me, it’s extra special to come back and do whatever I can to contribute.

“This is why I came back – to have that feeling jumping up and down when (Doug Brien) made that [game-winning] kick.”

The performance was Chrebet’s best since December of 2001, when he had eight catches for 113 yards against the Colts.

“We started at the beginning of the week addressing the third-down situation and laid it in Wayne’s lap, simple as that, and he was sensational,” Jet offensive coordinator Paul Hackett said.

Curtis Martin, who had his three-game 100-yard rushing game streak stopped (22-77), surpassed Franco Harris and moved into ninth-place on the NFL’s all-time rushing list. Next on Martin’s hit list is Marcus Allen, who’s eighth all-time with 12,243 yards. Martin needs 73 yards to move past Allen.

Herman Edwards tied Bill Parcells for fourth-place among all-time Jet head coaches with 29 regular-season victories. Walt Michaels is third with 39 wins.

Starting right guard Brandon Moore left the game in the first half with a left hamstring injury and was replaced by Jonathan Goodwin.

Jet WR Santana Moss had his right leg cramp up in the second half and he sat out the rest of the game. Moss’ 34-yard punt return in the third quarter was his longest of the season.

Jet center Kevin Mawae again had his right hand heavily-wrapped to protect the fractured finger on that half. That means he snapped lefty for the second game in a row.

LG Pete Kendall, who sprained his right wrist in practice last week and was listed as probable, started and played the entire game.

Jet DE John Abraham had three sacks, giving him six for the season. Abraham now has 10 multiple-sack games in his career.

Jets’ rookie No. 1 draft pick, LB Jonathan Vilma, got his first NFL sack when he took down Drew Bledsoe in the third quarter on a key third down play.

Chad Pennington had the second 300-yard passing game of his career yesterday, throwing for 304 on 31-of-42 attempts with 1 TD and 1 INT.

Up and down game for TE Chris Baker, who caught a TD pass and finished with 3 catches for 33 yards, but he fumbled one away and dropped another.
