ABC DROPS BALL WITH GOLF – WEEKEND ROUNDS ON TAPE-DELAY

It’s how much of golf is presented on TV, but it still doesn’t make sense for fans.

Today, ESPN has the WGC-American Express Open from Ireland live at 9 a.m. On Saturday and Sunday, ABC has it on tape-delay at 1 p.m.

It’s sort of like watching the first half of a football game live then being forced to watch the second half on tape.

“Our primary [time] windows for sports are weekend afternoons, so we have to put our programming in the afternoon on weekends, which would make a live presentation of the American Express Championships impossible on ABC,” spokesman Mark Mandel said.

If you listened to Dan Patrick on ESPN Radio last week, you might have heard him talking about the racism accusation in Terrell Owens’ new book, “Catch This!” In it, Owens confusingly and irresponsibly implies that Patrick is harder on black athletes than white athletes.

Owens cites a radio interview he did with Patrick after the Sharpie TD controversy. The inquisition was so tough it made Owens cry afterward, according to his book.

Patrick, insulted by the implication of racism, has reached out to Owens for a public or private conversation. Owens has refused so far. If Owens is going to make such an extreme allegation, he should back it up. Terrell, that’s the power of the pen … or Sharpie, if you will.

With the NHL in a lockout, the players aren’t the only ones who don’t get paid. Most, if not all, of the Rangers’, Devils’ and Islanders’ announcers aren’t receiving checks during the lockout, according to sources.

“It is company policy not to comment on the contract status of our announcers,” MSG/FSN spokesman Eric Gelfand said.

ESPN’s NHL game personnel will be paid, but will be asked to pick up extra chores on the plethora of ESPN talk shows, according to a network spokesman.

CBS’ Phil Simms used to complain about Bill Parcells all the time, just not to the media.

“In the locker room, we would all sit around and kill him, destroy him. ‘Ah, he doesn’t know what he is doing,’ ” Simms said.

Early in the Tom Coughlin Giants era, players have gone to the media with their gripes.

“I think it is disturbing that the players continuously leak so much to the press,” Simms said. “As time goes on, that will become less and less because it won’t be tolerated. Winning is going to stop the players from complaining, too.

“I complained all the time about Bill Parcells, but I sure as heck never took it to the media. I could lose my job.”
