CHILD HURT IN B’KLYN STAIRWELL COLLAPSE

An 8-year-old boy was hospitalized and dozens of people were rescued from a Brooklyn building after three stairwell landings collapsed last night, fire officials said.

A combination of age and a lack of maintenance caused the marble and steel stairwells between the second and fourth-floors of 433 Dean Street in Park Slope to come crashing down, the city’s Department of Buildings said.

An unidentified 8-year-old boy was on an upper level staircase and fell one story when the stairwell crashed, fire officials said.

He was taken to Lutheran Hospital to be treated for undisclosed minor injuries. No one else was injured.

Another 40 people were rescued from the building by firefighters who used engine ladders to bring each person down one at a time. It took almost two hours to evacuate the building floor by floor.

The building’s landlord, Joseph Gostantino, was issued a violation from the Department of Buildings for having a defective staircase.
