REYES’ RETURN ONE STEP CLOSER

MET NOTES

It won’t be tonight for Jose Reyes. But you can figure on seeing the 21-year-old phenom back at Shea this weekend.

After going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts yesterday for Double-A Binghamton, the Mets decided Reyes wasn’t quite ready to return to the Mets tonight.

“We’re going to have him go back to Binghamton,” GM Jim Duquette said. “His timing is not quite right.”

But don’t count on Reyes’ staying at Binghamton for long. Instead, barring something unforeseen, all signs point to a likely Met return tomorrow night at Shea, allowing Reyes to finally make his long-awaited and extremely anticipated 2004 debut.

“There’s no health issues at this point,” Duquette said.

Triple-A certainly has been a tough adjustment for David Wright. After three games there, he’s only hitting .583 (7-for-12) with a homer, two doubles and three RBIs.

Still, Duquette insisted, “There’s no immediate plans for him to come up.”

Orber Moreno (strained right shoulder) was set to throw a side session yesterday and will throw another tomorrow. Moreno is eligible to come off the DL Sunday. Meanwhile, Duquette said Scott Strickland (recovering from Tommy John surgery) should be able to start a rehab assignment shortly.

Mike Piazza caught last night for the first time since May 22. He’ll also be behind the plate tonight when he is honored for establishing the all-time home run record for catchers.

David Weathers admitted yesterday there was a two-to-three week stretch this year when he pitched at “less than 80 percent.”

“Obviously, the fans and stuff get on you pretty hard,” Weathers said. “If they could only see inside a person when you know you’re out there and you’re not even close to where you need to be physically but you’re still going out there, I think they would see things a lot differently.”

Shane Spencer (sore left shoulder) took batting practice yesterday and said he could be available for pinch-hitting duty.
