KELLY SOFTENS ON ANTI-GOP PROTEST

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the NYPD would consider letting an antiwar group demonstrate outside the Republican National Convention.

But Kelly also expressed concerns after United for Peace and Justice, an antiwar organization which had attempted to hold a massive rally in Central Park, stood him up at yesterday’s scheduled meeting.

The group requested that the meeting be put off for two weeks, but did not give a reason for canceling the appointment, leaving Kelly to question whether the group was “serious at all about planning this event considering the department’s concerns.”

The city has said it would not be able to permit the pre-convention demonstration in the park.

The organization did not return a call seeking comment.
