PREPPY BANK ROBBER HITS UPPER E. SIDE

A dapper hood tried to rob two Upper East Side banks in less than an hour yesterday morning – and made off with a small amount of cash from one, police said.

A surveillance video picture shown around the neighborhood by cops depicted him in attire worthy of an L.L. Bean catalogue: a stylish tweed cap and a gray-green, waxed-cotton barn jacket.

The dapper crook, described as a white man in his 50s, is suspected of trying to rob the Chase branch on 86th Street at Second Avenue at about 10:55 a.m.

He got no money from that try, said cops.

But eight minutes later, he was more successful at the HSBC branch on Madison Avenue at 89th Street, where police said he passed a threatening note to a teller and got away with $90. He was still at large last night.

After the dapper crook apparently finished for the day, another robber tried to hit two more banks in the same area, police said.

At 12:10 p.m., the second crook allegedly hit a Citibank on Madison between 65th and 66th streets and, five minutes later, a Chase branch on Madison at 79th Street, but did not get any money, cops said.

The suspect, apparently homeless, was arrested at around 12:30 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church at 865 Madison Ave. Police identified him as Richard Mayol, 53.
