BIG BLUE TRAINING CAMP STAYING PUT AT ALBANY

GIANT NOTES

Of all the changes underway with Tom Coughlin in charge as the Giants’ head coach, one aspect of the team’s operation that won’t be different is the site of training camp. The Giants and the University at Albany yesterday made official a three-year contract extension to keep the team at the school through 2006.

The Giants have trained in Albany since 1996 and Coughlin will be the third coach to spend a month working at the school’s sprawling facilities. Dan Reeves and Jim Fassel preceded Coughlin in Albany and were more than willing to engage fans in friendly banter in the relatively relaxed training-camp atmosphere. It’s unlikely Coughlin will uphold that tradition.

* Fulfilling his job requirements, GM Ernie Accorsi will attend quarterback Drew Henson’s showcase workout tomorrow at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The Giants are not believed to be interested in trading for Henson, but they did have him rated quite high (higher than Tom Brady) when the two were at Michigan.

The Texans, anticipating Henson’s departure from the Yankees’ farm system, shrewdly used a sixth-round draft pick on Henson a year ago and thus own his rights. They will trade him to the highest bidder. As many as 15 NFL teams are expected to attend Henson’s workout.

* The Giants have allocated five players to NFL Europe: TE Mark Inkrott (Cologne), QB Ryan Van Dyke (Cologne), DE Sean Guthrie (Rhein), T Dion Meredith (Berlin) and DE Jake Sprague (Scottish Claymores).
