A TRULY GREAT DAY IN HARLEM

It was party time for thousands of revelers yesterday at the 29th annual Great Day in Harlem Festival, where gospel, R&B, jazz and Bahamian music came together under overcast skies.

Vendors jammed the sidewalks, while festival-goers swayed to the vibrations of DJ Demo at Ulysses S. Grant National Park, 122nd Street and Riverside Drive.

“I came here for the music – it’s just so lively,” said Lydia Torres, 40, of The Bronx, who danced with daughters Erica, 4, and Emily, 6.

An afternoon shower couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm.

Event highlights included Bahamian National Youth Choir performances, folklore storytelling and a fashion show of the latest in urban wear.

“It’s a celebration of the most celebratory communities in the world,” said W.D. Turner, 46, a cyclist who took part in the 12-mile Greater Harlem Historic Family Bike Tour.

Former football Giant star Ottis Anderson said, “This is a great time to research your roots and find out the history of Harlem.

“You always hear bad things about Harlem, but today we showcase what we’re really all about.”
