TAX FRAUD IS A BIG PROBLEM AMONG MTA EMPLOYEES

Tax fraud is a big problem among MTA employees, state officials said yesterday in announcing the arrests of 10 low-level workers for allegedly cheating on their returns to the total tune of $112,500.

The workers – who include station

leaners, bus drivers, train operators and station supervisors – face up to four years in prison for allegedly failing to file or falsely filing their state tax returns.

But they may just be the tip of the iceberg, said Peter Farrell, deputy commissioner of the state Office of Tax Enforcement.

In the last two years, his office has learned of more than 800 MTA employees “who were engaged in some kind of shenanagans” in their state taxes – most of them through withholding schemes, Farrell said.
