BLIZZARD FREEZES AREA SCHEDULE

The snow and wind that whitewashed the East Coast over the last two days also washed away much of the region’s President’s Day sports schedule.

No horses raced locally yesterday, and college basketball games from Rhode Island to South Carolina as far West as Ohio were postponed last night by blizzard conditions.

Even the NBA broke down, pushing yesterday’s Raptors-Wizards matinee at D.C.’s MCI Center back to March 4.

Pittsburgh and Georgetown, scheduled to play an ESPN “Big Monday” game last night also in D.C., postponed their game as well.

Seton Hall postponed its Meadowlands meeting with Villanova, and Providence did likewise for its home contest with Miami. The Panthers-Hoyas and Friars-Hurricanes games will be played tonight, but Seton Hall has not yet announced a make-up date.

Local college basketball cancellations included Fairleigh Dickinson at Monmouth, Central Connecticut St. at Wagner, and Quinnipiac at LIU-Brooklyn.

Wake Forest and Maryland, whose game for first-place in the ACC was postponed Sunday night and delayed again yesterday afternoon, finally played at 5 p.m. yesterday in College Park, Md. The Terps won, 90-67.

In addition, a MAAC doubleheader at Harbor Yard Arena in Bridgeport, Conn., featuring St. Peter’s against Marist and Fairfield vs. Rider went off as scheduled.

On the track, Meadowlands and Monmouth Park canceled last night’s racing, and Philadelphia Park canceled today’s card.
