CHUCK WARNS OF GAS PAIN$

With gas prices in New York reaching unprecedented heights, Sen. Charles Schumer yesterday called on Washington to come to consumers’ aid by keeping “a careful eye” on oil companies.

“I don’t know if it exists right now, but I certainly want the federal government to look into it,” Schumer said during a press conference at his Midtown office.

Schumer questioned whether price gouging may exist and asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate, because the price of oil on the market has gone up much less than gasoline at the pump.

He said gouging is a potential issue because gas prices have skyrocketed 38 percent in New York City and 43 percent on Long Island over the past year.
