ABRAHAM SLATED FOR MRI TODAY

John Abraham will undergo an MRI test on his sprained left knee this morning, according to Jets’ officials.

Abraham, the Jets’ best defensive player, recorded 13 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl selection last season. He sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee early in Saturday’s afternoon practice and received treatment on the knee yesterday.

Today’s MRI will show whether there’s a tear of the ligament or not. If there is, Abraham, in his third season, could be out for an extended period of time, perhaps the season depending on the severity. If no tear is found, he could be back within a few weeks.

In the meantime, No. 1 draft pick Bryan Thomas will be thrust into a starting role in practice, likely in Thursday’s preseason opener in Pittsburgh and possibly for the start of the regular season.

Veteran free agent signee Steve White could also be in the mix on Abraham’s side, opposite Shaun Ellis.
