The state Assembly came up with $37 million in extra school aid to help every New York City classroom connect to the Internet, officials said yesterday.
The money, which came out of a construction fund controlled by Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), augmented the $163 million state-budget increase allocated for city schools.
“This amount ensures that the 2002 school year will begin without any budget cuts,” said Assemblyman Steve Sanders (D-Manhattan), chair of the Assembly Education Committee.
About $22 million will be spent on Project Connect, a $40 million initiative to wire every classroom to the Web. And $15 million is targeted to student-teacher computer workstations.
