NEW DRIVER FACING CHARGES AFTER HITTING FAMILY OF THREE

A Long Island woman, driving with a learner’s permit, yesterday mowed down a man, woman and their 11-month-old baby as the family walked across a street in Amityville, police said.

The victims – José Reyes, 26, Noreen Velasquez, 32 and son, Juan Reyes, of North Amityville – suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the 10:05 a.m. accident at Route 110 and Jefferson Avenue police said.

The driver, Elise Imbert, 34, of Amityville, was issued four tickets – on charges of driving unsupervised, and with an uninsured and unregistered vehicle using switched license plates, said Suffolk police spokesman Officer Sonny DiStafano.

Imbert, driving a Jeep Suburban, was leaving a gas station and riding on the shoulder of the road when a red light turned green at the intersection and she started to accelerate.

Police said Imbert did not notice the family crossing the street and ran into them. The victims were taken to local hospitals.
