REDISTRICT PLAN PITS DEMS VS. DEMS

EXCLUSIVE

ALBANY – Three New York City Democrats have been targeted for extinction in a secret Senate Republican redistricting plan, The Post has learned.

The plan, to be unveiled today, calls for six existing Senate districts in the city to be merged into three, with the Democratic incumbents required to fight it out in a battle for survival, sources said.

Three new districts also will be drawn.

The redrawn lines are part of a controversial Senate GOP plan to expand the 61-member body by one. The new seat would be in Brooklyn.

According to sources, the proposal would pit Sens. Carl Kruger and John Sampson against one another in a redrawn district in Brooklyn.

Sens. Daniel Hevesi and Toby Ann Stavisky would vie in a newly written district overlapping Brooklyn and Queens.

And Sens. Vincent Gentile and Seymour Lachman would have to fight it out for a redrawn district that would run between Brooklyn and Staten Island.

GOP sources say the intent is to redraw lines in a way that would make Republicans more competitive in the city. The plan is expected to be challenged in court. The Post reported last week that an Assembly plan would create two new seats in Queens, one in The Bronx and one shared between Brooklyn and Staten Island.
