IF NEEDED, PLAYOFF’S AT SHEA

MONTREAL – Major League Baseball is starting to believe.

Yesterday, the Mets won both their coin flips with the Braves and Phillies, meaning if a one-game playoff involving the Mets is needed, it will be at Shea on Monday, Oct. 8.

“You’d rather win every little bit that you can,” Bobby Valentine said.

Last week, MLB held coin flips, but excluded the Mets from the process, not thinking they had a chance. But with the Mets only four out with 12 games to play, the head honchos decided they’d better make plans in case a playoff is needed.

In ’99, the Mets qualified for the wild card by beating the Reds in a one-game playoff at Cincinnati.
