TRAFFIC STILL CHOKED AFTER 12 DAYS

Snarled traffic continues to plague the city nearly two weeks after the World Trade Center disaster closed two tunnels to non-emergency vehicles.

“The worst part within the city is the Gowanus [Expressway], there’s no doubt about that,” said Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Cocola, adding that the other major congestion points are at the Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge.

Port Authority officials said the Holland Tunnel might start accepting some regular traffic this week – which would reduce pressure at the other Hudson crossings – but no date is set.

The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel also remains closed to all but emergency vehicles and express buses.

The Brooklyn Bridge is open for Manhattan-bound traffic entering from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Sands Street only, with all exiting traffic being directed to the northbound FDR Drive.
