HILFIGER SHOWING OFF SPRING ‘PREP’ARATIONS

They’re already thinking about what they’ll wear next spring.

Professional style watchers – fashion journalists, store buyers, couture vultures and the fabulously rich – got their first taste of sartorial things to come yesterday, when Tommy Hilfiger kicked off the Spring 2002 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a peppy, preppie men’s show held in the Bryant Park Tents.

Wacky whale-and-flag motif sweaters? Tommy had ’em.

Colorful plaid pants and zippy windbreakers? They were there, too.

Also on hand was a sprinkling of gorgeous models and celebrities, including stunning blond mannequin Michelle Behennah.

Tommy’s show was only the tip of the Fashion Week iceberg.

For the next six days, more than 100 men’s- and women’s-wear designers will show their new wares to fashion lovers from around the globe.

Many of the shows will take place in Bryant Park but some adventurous designers are putting their runways in such spots as the West Side piers, Tavern on the Green and the Apollo Theater.
