VIN TAKIN’ HALF STEP FORWARD

JET NOTES

Vinny Testaverde is hoping to play the first half of tomorrow night’s preseason game against the Ravens.

“It’ll be nice to know that we’ll have a chance to get in a rhythm,” Testaverde said, “and this’ll be a good test for us going against probably the best defense in the league to see where we are.”

Testaverde played only two series in the preseason opener before giving way to Chad Pennington. Herm Edwards yesterday said the starters will play no fewer than 25 snaps.

“We still have some more installations to put in; our entire offense is not in yet,” Testaverde said. “We’re probably just over 400 plays as we speak. So I’m waiting to get it all in and then digest it all, and then that’s when you can say, ‘OK, let me breathe, let me take a breath and let me just absorb it all and feel comfortable with it. But right now everybody’s thinking a lot, and the thing we’re having trouble with right now is just being consistent every practice, because there’s so many new things being put in. Once you think you’ve got one thing down, you move on to another thing, and we’re working on that, then all of a sudden, what we’ve put in a week-and-a-half ago comes up, and you’re not sure of yourself because you’ve been working on the new things.”

The minimum number of West Coast offense plays that offensive coordinator Paul Hackett has installed in one night is 22. The maximum was 58.

“The key is everybody being on the same page and doing it consistently,” Testaverde said. “Then this offense is gonna click. Right now we’re seeing flashes here and there of greatness but it has to be consistent.”

David Loverne and J.P. Machado will fill in at right guard for Randy Thomas, who is being held out with a strained groin. Safety/special teams ace Chris Hayes (knee) will not play.
