RIVALS WAITING AND PLOTTING

WASHINGTON – George W. Bush and Al Gore played it cool and discreet as they waited on today’s certified vote totals from Florida, but privately they plotted battle.

Gore was being prepared by his aides to give a TV address today explaining his reasons for contesting the results from Florida – if he doesn’t collect enough votes to overcome Bush.

Gore’s aides were making tentative plans for the address, which might also be seen as an effort to keep top Democrats from telling Gore to pack it in.

And Bush might contest the results if Gore overtakes his lead.

Bush and Gore are waiting on the final word from Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, who this evening can announce the certified results from Florida.
