CITY UNEMPLOYMENT AT 10-YEAR LOW

Unemployment in the city has fallen to its lowest levels in a decade and record numbers of jobs are being created in the private sector, the Giuliani administration said yesterday.

Brandishing statistics from the State Department of Labor, the mayor said 7,400 new jobs were created last month. Giuliani said that, compared with October 1999, private-sector jobs have jumped by 89,000.

The city is on pace for another record year in job creation, the mayor said.

“With the creation of an additional 7,400 jobs last month, this is more great news for our city’s economy and further proof that New York’s City’s renaissance continues to surge,” he said.

In September, the city’s unemployment rate fell to 5.6 percent, the lowest in 10 years. At the beginning of the Giuliani administration, in December 1993, it was 10.2 percent.
