AMAZIN’S FINISH STRONG

13 INNINGS Mets 3 Expos 2

It was the last, but it certainly wasn’t the least.

The Mets won 3-2 in 13-innings in their longest game of the regular season. The Mets had previously gone 12 innings on two different occasions.

“Now we need 11 more,” said manager Bobby Valentine, making a reference to how many October wins it takes to win the World Series.

Although, yesterday’s result was just a tad more meaningful than a spring training game, the win did make the NL East standings look good as the Mets (94-68) finished just one game behind the Braves.

They did it when Benny Agbayani scored from second on third baseman Geoff Blum’s throwing error. Blum tried to throw Agbayani out at third in the 13th, but the ball was got away and Agbayani broke for home to score the game winner.

The Expos had their chances to win it earlier.

Jersey Bobby Jones loaded the bases in the tenth on two walks and a single before striking out two straight.

Then Terry Jones hit a fly ball to right-center field -and the biggest thing the Mets didn’t want to happen yesterday almost did -Darryl Hamiltom made the catch as he bounced off right fielder Bubba Trammell. Both were fine.

In the 11th with one out, the Expos again loaded the bases, but Pat Mahomes, one of the roster bubblemen, pitched his way out of the jam.
