$17 BILLION OK’D FOR ROADWORK

Albany lawmakers yesterday unveiled a $17.1 billion plan to improve roads and highways, including a $40 million high-tech project to speed traffic on the city’s busiest expressways.

The five-year plan calls for the repair or replacement of 1,000 bridges and resurfacing of 13,000 miles of roads across the state.

Projects slated for the city include the installation of a system of roadway sensors and message boards aimed at improving response time to highway breakdowns and emergencies.

Called the Intelligent Transportation System, the project will cost $40 million for the Grand Central Parkway, and the Long Island, Van Wyck and Brooklyn-Queens expressways.
