WASHINGTON- Sometimes success goes to your waist.
In his first year as a U.S. senator, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has picked up a lot of accolades for his hard work – and a lot of extra pounds.
“I’ve learned of Charlie the Butcher’s beef on a weck [a roll] in Buffalo and mozzarella and roasted peppers on Arthur Avenue,” said Schumer ruefully.
“It’s a big state with a lot of new and delicious things to eat, but certainly losing those 15 pounds will be my New Year’s resolution.”
Other occupational hazards confronting a senator – which Mayor Giuliani may face if he runs and wins – include:
* Being served five rubber chicken dinners a night, including dessert.
* A frantic schedule that means taking a car everywhere instead of walking.
* The temptation to eat candy while sitting around waiting for the Senate to take action.
