SUTTON PLACE TEEN IN 34-STORY DEATH PLUNGE

The teenage grandson of the owner of a luxury high-rise off Sutton Place plunged to his death from the terrace of a 34th-floor apartment in the building last night after partying with a friend, police said.

The victim, tentatively identified as Spencer Schweitzman, 18, landed in a shrub- and tree-shrouded plaza area of the Sovereign, at 425 E. 58th St., at 10:19 p.m.

The building is home to prominent figures in both law enforcement and entertainment, residents said.

The victim was “just a normal kid,” said one resident who did not want to be identified.

“It’s the classic ‘I have everything but I have nothing’ story … It’s such a shame.”

A young man standing outside the building, who appeared in shock and would not give his name, said, “My friend just jumped out the window.”

But police said they did not know if the victim fell or jumped.

Police said Schweitzman had apparently been staying in Apartment 34D of the 48-story high-rise while attending college in the city.

Schweitzman grew up in upstate Woodstock, they said.

Detectives believe Schweitzman and a friend had been partying at the youth’s apartment.

Police said they found a wine bottle and said they were looking into the possibility the victim had been smoking pot.

After police interviewed the only other person in the apartment at the time – the young man’s friend – they said no charges would be filed.

Cops were awaiting the arrival of relatives from Woodstock.

Residents were both shocked and saddened at the death.

“I’m so sorry to hear about that,” said Joseph Braswell. “I’m so sorry to hear such bad news. This building’s filled with everybody in the world.

“Oh, God, this is terrible.”
