The new Brooklyn location has been in the works for years

Back in 2019, Eater reported that L&B Spumoni Gardens was opening at 46 Old Fulton Street, between Elizabeth Place and Hicks Street, in Dumbo. Now, five years later, it seems an opening date is closer.

Brooklyn Eagle reports that the pizza institution is allegedly gearing up for a fall opening, as early as September, according to a supervisor at the site. The publication attributed the slowdown to issues with the NYC Department of Buildings, for work including the reconstruction of an exterior staircase. Eater has reached out to L&B Spumoni Gardens for more information.

This is the second location for the brand since the Barbati family opened the pizzeria in 1939. L&B Spumoni has cemented itself as one of New York’s cities iconic pizzerias — both for its square Grandma-style slices and its namesake, tri-colored spumoni ice cream, a favorite especially in the summertime thanks to its large patio with outdoor seating.

The expansion will carry on the legacy of Louis Barbati, L&B’s co-owner who was murdered in 2016. The case was the subject of an Oxygen true crime documentary, which aired in 2022, and explored the headlines that suggested possible mob ties.

The forthcoming Dumbo outpost joins other nearby other big-name pizzerias: Grimaldi’s and Juliana’s. When the L&B was first announced to be in the works, Joe Ciolli of Grimaldi’s squashed any potential beef, telling the New York Post: “It’s a different style of pizza. We have lines all the time — people come from all over the world.”
