Lip Lift

Are you tired of constantly applying lip fillers or relying on lipstick to enhance your pout? A lip lift may be the answer you've been looking for. Unlike lip fillers, which only add volume, a lip lift reshapes the upper lip area by removing skin to show more of the vermilion (colored) portion of the lips and creates a more youthful look. With minimal recovery time, a lip lift is a great option for those looking to achieve a permanent, more youthful appearance.

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a simple surgical procedure done to elevate the upper lift. With age, it’s normal for the upper lip to lose volume, stretch, and sag – just like other parts of the face and body. The vermillion, or colored part of the lip, may decrease in height and the upper lip may thin. Lines around the mouth area can also develop from age-related skin changes and muscle movement over the years. Together, these facial changes can contribute to a droopy, less-than-youthful appearance to the lips and mouth.

The goal of a lip lift is to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip. After local anesthesia is administered to the upper lip, a tiny incision is made at the base of the nose, and a small portion of tissue is removed. The amount of skin removed varies from patient to patient, as the surgery is very individualized and depends on the patient’s goals and skin laxity. This shortens the vertical distance to the mouth, thus lifting the upper lift. Using this technique, the incision is hidden in the natural depression of the nose, so the scar is barely visible. The result is a shorter lip with enhanced contour and shape.

Does a Lip Lift Have Any Side Effects?

Following the procedure, patients should expect some soreness, swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, or numbness in the lip or surrounding areas. These side effects are typically mild and short-lived, with the initial healing period lasting a few weeks. Incision scars may take several months up to a year to completely heal and fade.

Are You a Candidate for a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is best suited for people looking to enhance the shape and size of their lips, as well as correct uneven or asymmetrical lips. A lip lift might also be an ideal solution for patients who had a negative experience with lip fillers, leaving them with lips that look heavy and elongated. A lip lift can be done for patients of all ages; while it can address several signs of aging, younger patients also desire the look of fullness that the procedure can provide as well. Patients who are looking for a permanent alternative to lip filler may also be candidates for a lip lift.

Lip Lift Results

Immediately following a lip lift, patients can expect swelling, soreness, and bruising in the area, which will subside as the tissue heals. Swelling will typically get worse for the first few days, which is very normal, and should subside within a week. The initial healing period is 2-3 weeks, with final results setting in within a few months. Once healed, you’ll begin to notice an enhanced shape of your lips that is more youthful and defined in appearance. The results of a lip lift are permanent, but as your lips and face continue to mature, normal changes with age should be expected.
