Today is International Women’s Day, and I feel privileged to be in the position I am in and grateful for the celebration of my career by VodafoneZiggo through below campaign. At the same time, I feel I am not doing enough to change the system, change the music as I like to say. I strongly believe that real impact is not coming from empowering women or celebrating their choices, but from a fundamental rethink to how the business environment is structurally wired. And I believe individual leaders can make a real difference on a day to day basis. Don’t blame a policy, a culture, legacy, start acting today. It is about time. By…(and here are some practical examples) - not accepting any hires on key positions without a gender balanced shortlist and a interview process - not accepting young mothers in your teams to make 20% less as they tend to work parttime but actually delivering just as much as their full time male counter parts - have the dialogue on how to be flexible in handing enough mom-time within the work week - not accepting male only consulting teams - not accepting meeting slots that are close to impossible to attend for young parents- family time comes with peak times between 08-09 and 17-18 - not accepting core decisions to be made without a gender balanced working team - not accepting interruptions in meetings or mansplaining (or the other way around for that matter) - seek out the opinion of all voices in the meeting, not the most dominant - not accepting any pay gap in your teams (and dont justify it by saying that men are just better at negotiating for their salary - which they are) - and many more… Happy IWD - I do hope an ending concept at some point…

Today we celebrate International Women's Day. I celebrate the brilliant women around me that I am blessed with getting inspired by and learning from ❤️ I get more inspired by the women around me that have been needing to give a 110% to get to the same places as the mediocre men... And although it can be seen as a celebration, for me it is even more a reminder that we are absolutely not there yet. For me, this is not about male and female but more about masculine and feminine stereotypes and behaviours. So let's step up, let's push harder, let's talk more, and let's break this monolithic culture that we have had for way too long and open up for diverse input, and different ways of working together. To put things in to a more cheerful perspective, please read this article from this week. Written with humour but painfully true as I see this behaviour on a daily basis. Article is in Dutch but with the modern technical capabilities I bet an international audience can consume it as well 😁 And please mark the most important sentence: "Ik vind dat zelf dus totáál geen oplossing. Happy Women's Day! Many of us got the offer to come work for free today, to say something smart about why gender equality is so important. The organizations inviting us seldomly seem to understand how ironic this is. I got two work-for-free offers in the runup to IWD this year. Both of them huge organizations with huge budgets. "But there's no budget for this", IKEA said. Really too bad! Not the least since gender equality has a very strong business case (read more in my debate article in de Volkskrant today). Two thirds of companies have policies for gender equality and diversity, according to ILO. But plans alone will take us nowhere if not even huge organizations who claim to champion gender equality, pay women accordingly. Shout out to all organizations not understanding irony: Stop expecting women to show up at your work or event for free, and pay them for their time and expertise. "You owe me for the years, not the minutes." And to women getting those offers: No, it is not a great chance. Just say no. Together we make change happen. https://lnkd.in/eW5w7df5

New initiative to lobby & inspire greater representation and diversity in politics? Sign me up. Happy to have spoken at the launch of HerEU last night, alongside Lotte Stoops and Sarah Bouton, and with expert moderator Ana Fota. Kudos to founders Truuske Smits and Marie-Anne van Reijen — your vision and timing could not be more needed. And for the rest? A large part of the discussion was about the dreaded Q word: quotas. As I said last night, let’s dump the word as it’s obviously too triggering. But OF COURSE we need just, inclusive, equitable action and policies. And if you’re a “quota hire” or the “token woman”? Some time ago, in my first experience as formal leader of a department, for a while I was the only female in the Management Team of a plant. Although I enjoyed that phase and was very proud of my professional progress, I always felt that something was not quite right. Maybe it was because small things like my boss calling my male colleagues with respectful titles like "Doctor", "Professor", "Engineer", "Master"... while he called me "Chamaca (Kid)" or "Mija (daughter)". Or the same boss asking me to pour a cup of coffee for him in the middle of a meeting: always me even if any of my male peers were sitting closer to the coffee pot. Maybe it was because more important issues, like this peculiar boss confessing in a 1:1: "Mija, I really can not understand what are you doing working here. At your age, women are supposed to get married and take care of their families and their homes". Or maybe it was because bigger things, like the accidental discovery that all my male colleagues in other plants, doing the exact same job as me, were making more money than me. It's been almost 20 years since then, and situation could not be more different for me. I work for a company where I am respected, recognized and valued since day 1. A company where I am equally paid and equally challenged. A place that offers plenty of development opportunities (What about acting as Plant Manager for 6 months :) ?) regardless gender, race, age or any other quality different than individual potential and performance. I am proud of Continental's commitment to equality, which I feel organic and authentic. Unfortunately, Continental and I are exceptions in a world where the rule is gender is still treated as a limitation for professional success in many companies. Millions of women can not access to same opportunities, same salaries and same recognition. That needs to change and I really hope we as a society can turn every working place in a one that feels fully right to be in 💜 #8M #ContinentalMexico #WomanInManufacturing #WeAreLCO
