The challenge lies in enabling accessibility for smaller enterprises in emerging markets. ‍What’s the deal with European climate tech?? I made the globe flipping pilgrimage to the Netherlands and Rubio Impact Ventures from Australia last year, so I was happy to share reflections for Giant Leap's 100th Small Steps about what these climate tech ecosystems can learn from each other. Fast read below, or link in comments for the full version. Unfortunately, the first thing I learnt there’s no silver bullet to climate tech hardware funding anywhere you go - you can have 20x more universities and 20x more funding like Europe and still find yourself scratching your head over “Series B gaps”, “valleys of death” and how you’re going to finance that demo facility for biomanufacturing/battery chemistry/direct air capture/[insert world saving doodad here]. But all is not lost - there is a fast growing cohort of deep tech hungry funds in the European scene like Breakthrough Energy, Rubio Impact Ventures, Planet A Ventures, Extantia, Zero Carbon Capital at the early stages and 2150 and World Fund for later stage ventures who are realising the value in deep decarbonisation visions. More, more, more. Australia climate tech can learn from European public funding, which goes hard! In the Netherlands, public funding effectively TRIPLES every private dollar invested into Seed stage ventures, often close to leading universities like TU Delft and Wageningen who are spinning out energy and agrifood technology leaps at pace. And later stage funding gets support from Invest-NL, which both invests direct into deep tech companies (see Mosa Meat 40M raise) and indirectly into funds that focus on facility financing. When deployed effectively, the public payoff for the greater good is huge. Second, Australian climate tech should build up more of a deep dive culture for deep decarbonization technologies. Looking at pre-commercial projects with transformative potential is a different model requiring a different approach: partnering with universities, building networks of trusted technical advisors, and being able to read a techno economic model in house. European climate investors have generally shifted their risk profile towards technical risk, and early signs are that it pays off. Flipping the script, I have noticed that Europe (at least in the social media sphere) talks a lot less about diversity & inclusion than Australia, particularly in the climate tech space. A Just Transition is going to need voices heard from all fronts and wealth generation from this monumental economic shift to be distributed evenly, so I’d love to see more of this on the European platform. In line with Triodos Bank's science based target to reach net zero by 2035, we initiated a climate change engagement project with the goal to encourage companies in our Impact Equities and Bond portfolios to set science-based GHG emission targets, in line with the 1.5°C trajectory. "Our approach is two-fold. One, we focus on companies that are still in the early stages of establishing a climate change strategy. These companies can greatly improve their approach by setting targets that are science-based. Two, we focus on the highest emitters in our portfolio, as reducing emissions for this group can substantially and efficiently decrease the emission intensity of our portfolio," explain investment analysts André d'Ursel, Luc van Haaren, and Lilia Feghiu.
