Robotics Team Return of the Screws

The team Return of the Screws participated in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) for three years in tournaments on three different continents. In this competition, teams have to design, built and program a robot that has to complete a variety of tasks, both autonomous and driver-controlled.

In this competition, teams have to design, built and program a robot that has to complete a variety of tasks, both autonomous and driver-controlled.
Our rookie year was a big learning experience. For every member, it was the first time we had to design, built or program a robot. Difficult, but a fun experience and we ended the season well with the Dutch Open: we won the Motivate Award for our enthusiasm and team spirit.
After our rookie year, we wanted to aim high the second season: we wanted to go to the World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri.
In the German Open only the winner of the Inspire Award, the overall prize, would get a ticket to the World Championship. Although we were no favorites during the robot matches, we managed to make it to the finals. This result, combined with our outreach before the tournament and enthusiasm during the tournament, was enough for the Inspire Award and thus a ticket to the most important FTC-tournament: the World Championship.
The World Championship was a fantastic experience and we learned a lot, but sadly we did not make it through the group stage. During the Award Ceremony, we got nominated for the Promote Award, but we ended up in second place.
The third and last year was there to end with a bang. We started the season in Aviano, Italy where we took part in the Aviano Invitational. With our robot, we became the Winning Alliance Captain and we won the Compass Award for the best-programmed robot.
To finish our FTC-career, we went to the other side of the world (Sydney, Australia) to participate in the Asia Pacific Invitational together with the world champion of that year. We finished second in the group stage and stranded in the semi-finals. With that result, we retired knowing we got the most out of ourselves the past three years and became close friends.

2nd place at the Ontwerpwedstrijd Werktuigbouwkunde (Design Contest Mechanical Engineering)

Every year all first-year students in Mechanical Engineering from the Delft University of Technology take each other on in the Design Contest where they have to design and built the best machine. The students that started in 2017-2018 had to design a (scaled) container handler that had to move multiple containers as fast as possible while being as lightweight as possible. Precision was key as all the containers had to be loaded and unloaded on small pins. My team, WB78, ended up in the second…

My team, WB78, ended up in the second place with the same amount of points, but a slightly slower time than the winners.
