🎁 Working with the highly motivated and creative people at OPEN Rotterdam has been such a joy over the last couple of years; this year I can even proudly call myself their mentor/coach. 🖌 Every time I visit the newsroom, I find myself impressed and inspired by the amount of work the (very) compact editorial staff gets done, reporting on all the different sides of daily life in Rotterdam. I am amazed by the way they combine critical and independent reporting with a very humane and self-evidently inclusive approach to urban journalism. 1️⃣ One of the projects that this local public medium has been running for a while, is the "City District Newsroom". Each month, Sascha Meijer and his team, pick a new part of town. They use a somewhat standardized approach: it always starts with talking to key figures in the neighbourhood, while roaming the streets of Kralingen, Rozenburg or Feijenoord. The goal is not to immediately interview anyone they meet, but to grow a sense of place, pressing local matters and gaining trust of the local communities. ↗ The impact might not be immediately visible in clicks or numbers of articles/videos published, but I think it appears on a much deeper level: a solutions journalism based approach to local reporting, aimed at (re)building trust and growing pluralistic networks. 🎧 In this podcast by the Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek , Sascha talks about the project and its approach. This week marks my 1 year anniversary as CEO at ValueBlue. The company that was founded by my father Wilko Visser and that I have been part of for almost 10 years. Being a first-time CEO at a fast-growing scale-up has been an amazing ride with an unbelievable mix of experiences. As I celebrate this first milestone, I’d like to share some of my most valuable learnings.   👥 1. It’s all about the people Any company thrives or fails because of the people that are in it. The people are the company. It's truly inspiring to see the magic that happens when a diverse group of talented individuals, each with positive energy and a growth mindset, come together. And I can’t emphasize the importance of the word ‘diverse’ enough. Working with people from 5 different continents, 28 countries and various backgrounds is what helps us build a high-performing team - creating a synergy where 1+1 equals 3. This is what brings me to work with a smile every day.   😍 2. Customer obsession makes the difference When we bring together our talented team, it's essential to focus everyone on the right goal: customer experience. Every decision should be made with the customer in mind. Don’t build features just to achieve parity. Don’t sell simply to meet targets. Do it to create value for your customer. In fact, the name ValueBlue is inspired by the book 'Blue Ocean Strategy'. The idea was that by innovating towards unmatched customer value, we consistently discover new Blue Oceans - breaking away from traditional markets.   🚀 3. Enjoy the ride Leading a scale-up means that there’s always a lot going on. Next week always looks a little quieter, but turns out to be even busier. This is why it’s important to genuinely enjoy every moment of the crazy ride. Surround yourself with colleagues, customers, and partners that inspire you. Focus on building a product that you believe in. In my case the most user-friendly, widely adopted platform in the ever-evolving, wildly interesting field of enterprise architecture. Despite the bumpy road that comes with being a CEO, I recognize how lucky I am to be in this position, and I embrace this journey with all my heart.   And here's the exciting news: We're just getting started! Over the past year, we’ve been busy building a product roadmap that will help us change the enterprise architecture landscape as we know it. With one year down, I'm ready for another 10 fantastic ones 😉   Big shout out to ValueBlue and the entire team for being there. Reaching preschool kids Iene Miene Media (2023) researched the media usage of preschool kids aged 0-6 years in the Netherlands. It turned out that 0-1 year-olds mainly watch (smart) TV in a day. Among 2-3 year-olds, watching on mobile, tablet, or laptop is becoming increasingly more popular, and there is a significant growth in gaming as a daily activity among 4-6 year-olds. When you think about reaching preschool kids, you naturally also think about reaching their parents. Three-quarters of parents indeed remotely monitor what their child does with digital media (Netwerk Mediawijsheid, 2023). This is also called co-viewing. This year has been filled with amazing opportunities and this one ranks in the top 3 for me, personally. It was maybe a month ago or so that I got a call to talk about the upcoming Den Haag Inspireert event. I've been wanting to produce a video that puts spotlight on what The Hague represents, as a city, as a whole. What it means to me, as someone who wasn't born here but chose it as my home. I thought why not, let me give that idea and in return, I got the 3 most powerful words any creators loves to hear "we love it". From there on, it was a rush! Every day, every night. Walking up and down the streets, the beach, neighbourhoods, chasing the right moments. The idea wasn't to glorify the city or anything like that. In all honesty, it was to give an honest account of what this city stands for, in my view at least. You see, when I came to The Hague, I wasn't quite sure where my life was going. It was in this city that I found my purpose and direction, met the people that I cherish the most in the world, and have worked on things that make me proud to be who I am and do what I do. To some, The Hague may be the international city of peace and justice. To some, it may be the city of the royal family and the political centre of the country. Some others see it as a city of impact, others as the city by the sea. It's the city to do good and do business in. It may have nice hotels, beautiful venues, lots of paintings, and a rich history. The Hague can wear many hats and punch well above its weight on the world stage but all of that, all of its history and glory and standing, that all comes from its people. This video was produced from quite a bit of existing footage on HPM's server but the bulk of the footage you see was run-and-gunned. The people aren't actors. The shots aren't planned. The words don't come out of the branding manual. This is The Hague from our perspective, the people who told the story. Each of us added a little bit of our own flavour into it and in the end, I think, it told a beautiful story. This is The Hague, and The Hague is its people. We are The Hague! 💚 💛 #WijzijnDenHaag

5 things I've learned in the past year since I moved to the Netherlands as a solopreneur (that might help you as well) 1. I don’t want to be just a freelancer, I want to build a sustainable business. Viewing my freelance career as a business, rather than just executing one-time projects, has been crucial. 2. Collaboration and teamwork, even as a solo entrepreneur. This helped me grow and execute amazing projects. Not to mention all the meaningful connections I've made! 3. Dedicating one day a week to working on my business is key to sustainability and success. It might sound like a lot, but this helps me to have a better overview and to see the big picture of my business. 4. Embracing rejections—they are just redirections. Being rejected is one of the hardest things. It took me some time to accept and embrace it. 5. Learning who I want to work with, and who I don’t. They're both equally important, but sometimes we don't "work" on the second one. What have you learned lately that has helped you on your journey?

Sadly, mental health issues weigh heavily on the EU. It's clear that enhancing mental well-being is crucial not only socially but also economically, especially in light of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shockingly, the WHO found that during the first year of the pandemic, global rates of anxiety and depression surged by 25%. The goal of this fundraiser is for one of our supporters to bike as far as possible within the 24 hours. The goal is 300 kilometers, but let's see what adventures the journey brings! I’ve started an MBA, but who cares? When I began my MBA Public & Private at Nyenrode Business University Amsterdam, I didn't share it online. When I passed my first MBA Module Market, Law and Ethics; I didn’t share it either. In the past, I was always the first to communicate an achievement. And of course, it’s important to celebrate wins and inspire little girls and young women around the world, that we can achieve so much even in the toughest times of our lives. But the WHY is more important than the achievement, the WHAT, itself. Because... 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂. In a world obsessed with status and titles, we often forget what truly matters. We chase MBA’s, job titles, and accolades, thinking they define our worth. But here's a truth I've learned on my journey: At the end of the day, people won't remember your titles or awards. They will remember how you made them feel. As a former member of parliament and entrepreneur, I've held titles that many would envy. Yet, the moments that stick out in my memory and the memories of those I've interacted with aren't about titles. It's about the laughter shared, the impact you had on society, the positive impact on their lives. The kind words when times are hard, and the uplifting talks that started change. This is very impressive, I'd just add that it's paramount to have a leadership team that is willing to allow the marketing team to make this kind of engagement-driven content and not concentrate too much on "selling" via social media. Organic social media management can be so much more powerful if focused on the long run, on mustering brand awareness rather than driving direct conversions or clicks.

My wonderful mentee, Lieselot Declercq and 40under40 mentor Lieve Verplancke have both challenged me to share a book that had a profound impact on my life. As a book addict, reading between 20 & 30 books a year, this is not an easy choice. There are so many good reads out there ! This is also why I love this favourread initiative by Alixe Tsang-Leclercq, Dorien Vandormael and Mayada Srouji of Belgium's 40 under 40 since it broadens my "to read" list again with some great suggestions by inspiring people. Thank you to everyone who shared their favourite books already! Between the many choices available, I decided in the end to share a book that is not revolutionary in terms of global impact or technology, but had a profound impact on how much time I spend in bed. Bear with me :-) In these busy times, with a world changing at an incredible pace, it is essential to be able to keep your energy, spirits, empathy and intellectual capacity high. And while sports and nutrition is well known to keep you healthy, one of the underestimated secret powers is sleep. Why we sleep by Matthew Walker, PhD opens your eyes to how good sleep is the key to unlocking a productive and happy life. It explains what sleep does to your body and mind and the research behind it. Once you read this book, you will guard your sleep like a lion and it will improve your decision making, happiness and productivity !
