Two actuarial colleagues were discussing about model complexity within the context of #IFRS17. One view is that, a complex model poses risks of misinterpretation and poor adaptation, and the other view is that, too much simplicity poses the risk of inadequately capturing the key features of a cash flow projection. Is there an actuarial industry perspective to model complexity? At any rate, if a model passes the validity tests, should complexity become a discussion point?

As an actuary working with a complete data analytics and AI company, the one advice I would give to younger folks wanting to enter similar field is that do not limit yourself and your knowledge to solve traditional problems of reserving/capital requirements taught in your textbooks. Be eager to solve more (even appearing small) problems with your in-depth knowledge of math, programming and insurance. Collaborate with other teams to see areas where your actuarial knowledge can add value to an organisation. May be it's a sales team which is looking for what promotional strategy is working. You would be surprised by how much your knowledge would get appreciated. I have led quite a many projects of valuations, IFRS 17 transitions, capital modelling in my career, but I have never seen any of my clients this happy than when I designed a simple performance dashboard for it one key product, which tracks its performance over time, and show it under different matrices like dealers, car type, manufacturing origin etc. It's a simple tool, but reality of working is that I had to get like 10 different spellings of "Mitsubishi" corrected (one can imagine how many others I had to correct). Well, that's what like working in data analytics most of the time. But the feedbacks I received from its Underwriters were beyond I could imagine. From a technical perspective it may not any high level analytics, but it added great value for them to do "selective pricing increase and discounts to dealers." My key takeaways, change your outlook of just being an actuary, see yourself from perspective of a person trying to add value to business through analytics cause sometimes as an actuary, we confine our role to a "regulatory" one. There is a lot we can offer. #dataanalytics #actuarialscience

The materiality question has been considered by most companies but the underlying state of the data feeding into the reporting remains largely unsolved. We need, sometimes, to go back to the basics to fix what data is being used by whom for what and that it is of good quality in order to obtain a true picture that the executive committee can rely upon to make strategic decisions.
