What The Future
Machineproductie
Reimagine production. Realize potential.
Over ons
What the Future creates breakthrough batch-to-mass manufacturing technologies that enable planet-friendly industrial scale production. We reinvent existing processes with breakthrough perspectives, helping manufacturers realize the untapped possibilities of engineering, digital design and 3D technology to minimize production cost, business risk, and environmental impact. Our mission is to improve manufacturing by developing and implementing our significantly cleaner production method. 3DTI is currently utilised in two commercial applications: What The Future Food: an end to end platform that powers local manufacturing of frozen confections and chocolate, at any volume and in any shape. This enables new, small batch commercial opportunities and allows for healthier alternatives. What The Future Footwear: an end to end platform that powers local, sustainable production of footwear and footwear components via circular mono material manufacturing. What The Future was founded by serial entrepreneurs Eduard Zanen and Janne Kyttanen. Together with DOEN Participaties and Fair Capital Partners Impact Investing, the What The Future team is now implementing 3DTI in factories worldwide.

Founder & CPO Janne Kyttanen on shifting from a love of complexity to an appreciation for simplicity - and all the elements that are essential to bring the bigger picture to life ⤵️
I've spent a significant part of my creative design career immersed in 3D printing. The intricate geometries I could create fascinated me, and it's easy to get lost in that complexity if you're not careful. As I've grown older, I've found clarity in focusing my energy, recognizing that aging has been a blessing in this regard. Over the years, I've shifted from a love of complexity to an appreciation for simplicity. My driving sentiment has become: How can we simplify complexity? This shift meant putting my artist and design career on hold for several years to focus on underlying factors—elements that might not make magazine covers but are essential for the bigger picture to come to life: finance, supply chains, archetypes, chemistry, logistics, engineering... It's incredibly satisfying to see everything coming together in our second 3DTI vertical after food/ice cream. We're now producing footwear and its components at the speed of popsicles with Shloop - The Shoe Loop. Interestingly, all this innovation is happening in an old bakery in downtown Meridian, MS.

What happens to molds in the #3DTI process after products are made? Janne Kyttanen explains... ⬇
People often ask me what happens to our molds in our 3DTI process after our products are made. To put it simply, the molds are shredded and then sent back for film extrusion. Since we control the plastics loop and don’t use any mold release agents in our process, the molds remain pure, enabling us to achieve a highly circular molding process. An additional aspect that people should know is that when the mono materials molds are returned to extrusion with this level of clarity and purity, we recover 60% of our costs from the next batch. In short, circularity is built directly into our business model. Throwing the molds into landfill would equal us to throwing money out of the window. Circularity is complex, and we advise people and companies to integrate it into economically viable loops. For example, it is far more difficult (read: impossible) for Coca-Cola to retrieve all their empty PET bottles from the depths of the oceans and bring them back for production. Their business was never built around circularity, so its rather difficult to go back in time and change it. Sorry for the noisy video…we are building and its very noisy around here😊

A passionate advocate for impactful new tech, chemical engineer and finance specialist – meet Martijn van den Hul – our Chief Financial Officer. As CFO Martijn has played a huge role in shaping the strategic direction of What The Future, with responsibility for strategic business development and fundraising focusing on potential new markets for our tech. While Martijn will sadly be leaving us at the end of June, we want to highlight his brilliance and express our gratitude for his contribution. We’re incredibly proud of the opportunity that lies ahead for him when he joins Thermeleon as co-director in July. Want to know what makes Martijn tick? In his own words ⬇ 🚀 “I’m very tech-driven and I really enjoyed working in an environment in which I could combine my experience with finance and venture capital with my background in chemical engineering. One of my highlights has been working with Ana Margarida Fontaínhas in defining our own chemistries and figuring out how to implement these.” 💡 “My passion is to combine the power of new tech with ideas that have the potential for significant and lasting impact. Leaving our What The Future family will be tough but I’m excited by the opportunity to turn my hand to another impactful organisation, Thermeleon, and to introduce a new type of heat battery, with the potential to significantly reduce emissions of commercial greenhouses.” When not working Martijn can be found underwater, diving, or whizzing along cycle lanes either on foot or two wheels! ⚡ Connect with Martijn if… you want to talk about new technologies with impact. He wants to know about anything and everything that’s out there, however crazy an idea it may initially seem.
