Area vision for a #vibrant, #connected Campus Heijendaal in Nijmegen! Recently, our expert Elbert Arens presented the first explanation of the Area Vision for Campus Heijendaal during an online webinar with Ien van der Coelen, from the Municipality of Nijmegen. Campus Heijendaal is a unique area encompassing healthcare, education, research, business and housing. It has a rich history as a former estate that is still visible in the landscape and special buildings. The Area Vision aims to create a vibrant, connected campus that celebrates the special qualities of the landscape and heritage, while providing state-of-the-art facilities for education and research. This will significantly impact #knowledge development and #innovation in society. During the webinar, Elbert discussed the importance of investing in sustainable and active mobility, more liveliness, a functional mix and proximity with 'breathing space' for the future. He also highlighted plans to make the area greener and more biodiverse, while maintaining a balance between peace and bustle. The campus institutions (Radboud University, Radboudumc and the HAN University of Applied Sciences) and the Gemeente Nijmegen have big plans for the area, with the Area Vision guiding the way! What if we prioritise #health in spatial planning and our living environment? Last Friday our healthy cities expert Marianne Lefever presented a keynote at the annual Health Day in Brabant, organised by the Provincie Noord-Brabant. With over 200 professionals in attendance, we explored and reflected on this critical question. Marianne shared insights from her 10+ years of experience in creating healthy living environments and discussed the fundamental building blocks, which derived from our collaborative research with the Provincie Zuid-Holland, Gemeente Dordrecht, and Dienst Gezondheid & Jeugd ZHZ. You can read the full report in Dutch here: https://lnkd.in/ePEXUGxx After keynote speeches by Marianne and Lodewijk Asscher, the event featured many inspiring workshops on topics such as combating loneliness through improved environments and using environmental visions and programmes to improve health. A big thank you to Wies Arts and the Province for organising such an inspiring event. We left with numerous new insights and practical tips on how to create truly healthy living environments, both spatially and socially. Let’s continue this important work together!

Preliminary design ‘Nota Ruimte’ outlines the spatial future of the #Netherlands in 2050! Over the past few months we have been working with Generation.Energy on the map material for the preliminary design ‘Nota Ruimte’, a publication of the Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties. This draft offers a spatial vision for the entire Netherlands, encouraging each region to contribute to a sustainable future based on their unique strengths. In the report the challenges facing the Netherlands are grouped into three 'movements', which are strongly interlinked and supported by our maps: 1. #Sustainable Agriculture and Nature: Integrate agriculture with nature and manage land carefully. 2. #Climateneutral and #Circular Society: Save energy, produce locally, and balance regional supply and demand. 3. #Strong Regions, Cities, and Villages: Develop housing with jobs and accessibility to support regional growth and quality of life. This first version of the ‘Nota Ruimte’ provides a spatial plan for the Netherlands up to 2050, guiding decisions on agriculture, nature, housing, the economy, and energy security. Click through the maps we developed portraying two of the movements below! Floating Cities at the #PROVADA 2024! Last week, our expert Gijs de Haan, together with Annius Hoornstra of ThePositiveLab and Martijn Kooiman, joined the PAS bv stand to talk more about our research into floating construction. During the session, we discussed the Rijnenburg case study: a design for 2,500 floating houses in the Utrecht polder development area, where 25,000 houses will eventually be built. Through this case study, we have shown how the positive social impact of floating construction can contribute to financial #feasibility. In fact, the floating city responds to pressing societal challenges that involve several transitions. These include the transition to sustainable energy and mobility, the preservation of #biodiversity, the promotion of a circular economy, and the strengthening of social and health values. In the study, we make several suggestions on how to address these issues. One of the key findings is that it could lead to a new approach to financing area development: the 'social investment model'. What this alternative might look like is something we explored in the new phase of our #FloatingCities study, which will be published soon. Stay tuned!

We proudly present Team N.O.W.! PosadMaxwan strategy x design, planB. (elisabeth boersma), Crimson Historians & Urbanists, and Buiting Advies BV have joined forces as Team Na Oorlogse Wijken (Post-War Neighbourhoods) to create the #neighborhoods of the future. We love to take action and invite you to join us in this endeavor. Our innovative approach connects short-term and long-term goals, positively impacting people, history, nature, real estate, and public spaces. Our integrated #vision ensures that different domains reinforce each other. The large-scale sustainability challenges in the post-war and post-65 neighborhoods in the Netherlands provide an opportunity to address multiple issues simultaneously. Our holistic approach, backed by diverse stakeholders, addresses energy transitions, new housing concepts, socioeconomic benefits, circular materials, new amenities, employment, biodiversity, mobility, and densification. How to Build Ground Up from the #Soil? - Phase 2 Out Now! We are thrilled to announce that the second phase of our study on designing with and for vital soil in urban areas is now available! Download it here in English and Dutch: https://lnkd.in/edpja9fM. A year ago, we began a collaborative journey with soil experts, environmental engineers, civil engineers, ecologists, utilities, and water authorities. The result? A comprehensive #handbook for city makers, packed with knowledge, principles, practical design measures, and inspiring scenarios. This second phase delves into the quantifiable impacts of various measures. We evaluated which measures contribute most effectively to key transitions (climate, biodiversity, circularity), with a focus on vital soils. This has enriched our handbook with impact scores and a new selection tool. A notable discovery: New drawing techniques are essential to accurately represent vital soil. Traditional design drawings often depict soil as an empty space beneath black lines. The illustration below experiments with innovative techniques - from bird's-eye views to longitudinal sections and underground maps - to vividly portray vital soil from multiple perspectives. What's next? With the support of Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and Gemeente Rotterdam - Stadsontwikkeling, we're launching a third phase. This phase will target an even broader audience and explore the application of these measures in different public space typologies. Let’s make soil visible together! Team: Laura Thomas, Gintarė Norkūnaitė, Ganesh Babu R P, Martina Germanà, Eva Verberne, Anu Babu, Preksha Rautela, Kübra İlayda Turan, Juliette Brouwer, Michelle de Roo, Esmee van der Leeden - Kuit, Froukje van de Klundert and Vincent Babeș.

Unlocking broader thinking in urban #ecology! Have you listened to our podcast yet? In this episode we discuss an innovative measuring tool for ecological assessment and monitoring. We are joined by Wouter Witkamp, project manager at Schiphol Area Development Company (SADC N.V.) and Emma de Haan, parametric specialist at PosadMaxwan. To achieve goals and monitor progress towards a better and ecologically friendly future, SADC commissioned our Digital Cities team, among many other partners, to apply integrated working methods and digital modules. The modules, one of which is this ecology tool, measure, monitor and evaluate the ecological value of both existing and future development designs in logistics business park, Schiphol Trade Park. And the best part? This tool could be valuable not just for other business parks - it could transform any urban area. Want to know why? Listen to the full podcast: https://lnkd.in/dGHV-W53

What if #health was the guiding principle of urbanisation? Last summer we explored this question together with Provincie Zuid-Holland, Gemeente Dordrecht and Dienst Gezondheid & Jeugd ZHZ. Some interesting insights and tools have emerged from this research: 🏗 A collection of concrete building blocks for a healthy living environment, Swipe! 🔻 A method for reverse design ("omgekeerd ontwerp") - more to come soon! 🏡 An understanding that urbanisation from a health perspective could actually lead to more housing, not less or slower. It also improves green spaces, mobility and amenities. Our Office Clothing Swap 👗🌿 We keep buying new clothes all the time. Some will never or hardly ever be worn and end up wandering in our wardrobes. Others end up too quickly in the textile waste mountain. While more and more fashion is available at low prices, the #environment pays a high price. The massive, rapid production, use, and disposal of clothing lead to #CO2 emissions, microplastic pollution, and contamination of soil and water. At our office, we believe in shaping not just urban environments, but lifestyles that are sustainable and eco-friendly. That's why we organized a #clothingswap together with Generation.Energy. Colleagues brought clothes that were still in a good condition but no longer worn, giving them a second life. All leftover clothes were donated to Leger des Heils ReShare. In the Netherlands alone, we already buy about 50 new items of clothing per person per year. If everyone bought 6 pieces of clothing less per year, we would save as much CO2 emissions in the Netherlands as 85,000 car journeys around the world. So let's exchange clothes before buying new ones!
